One could almost confuse this for the Aston but for the garish over-application of silver plastic inside and out. In the cabin, the door panel switch surrounds look chintzier than anything in a car this expensive should, and outside, the R-specific front air intakes look like cheap plastic knockoffs of the real thing, whatever that might be. Setting aside my contempt for sub-par materials, the XKR is appealing as a luxury cruiser that rewards its driver. The supercharged V-8 always has torque and power in reserve, and as with the XJ sedan, the XK rides and handles well thanks to an aluminum body that weighs far less than competitors'. The steering is precise but a little overboosted for my taste, a Jaguar trademark. The upshot of light weight and light steering is a car that always feels fleet of foot.

The XK8 gets a fresh start, owing little to its current namesake. It is closely related to the latest XJ, with a bonded and riveted aluminum monocoque structure, and the coupe and the convertible will be built on the same line, parallel to the XJ, at Jaguar's Castle Bromwich plant. he standard model continues with the 294-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 engine used in the XK since 2003. Jaguar proudly asserts that its power-to-weight ratio is 10 percent better than the Mercedes SL500's. Jaguar also claims 0-to-60-mph acceleration "comfortably below" six seconds and a quarter-mile within 0.2 second of the current XKR's time (13.8 at 105 mph). There will be a new XKR, with more than 400 horsepower from its supercharged engine, but not until 2007. The XK, for the first time in a Jaguar, has fingertip paddles attached to the steering wheel for manual ratio selection, linked to a ZF six-speed automatic.

The 4.2-liter V-8 will still be naturally aspirated with 300 horsepower or supercharged with 400, so a slim rear-deck spoiler and new wheel designs are the only other changes to the 2008 Jaguar XJ. Other than those trifling alterations, the XJ retains the same dated design as the 2007 model, a basic shape the car has worn since LBJ was in the White House. There are people who still appreciate the shape after all these years, but fewer and fewer are finding their way into Jaguar showrooms.

The 2007 XK, in coupe and shortly thereafter softtop, is intentionally several notches higher on the sporting scale than the previous version. The body is within an inch of the previous car in length, but the proportions have been butched up: It's 3.7 inches wider for a broad stance, and the wheelbase is up 6.4 inches, which tightens the overhangs. The gills on the front fenders cancel out the "pretty car" look we've come to expect of Jaguar two-plus-twos.

The quintessentially British interior trappings are first-rate, and the ride is supple yet taut. Rear-seat space is a joke, but the rest of the XK is so nice that it can be forgiven. Exterior styling might be a bit too subtle for some, rear-seat space is extremely limited.

First let's look at what was promised. At launch, Jaguar claimed the XFR could hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds, which, if possible, would indeed make this 4300-pound, leather-swathed sport sedan one quick feline. Too bad Coventry lies.

Our 2010 XFR shaved three tenths off the official 0-60 claim, even on the dusty tarmac of our El Toro testing facility. The 510-horse Jaguar also displayed more top-end speed than advertised, blitzing through the quarter mile in a mere 12.7 seconds at 114.1 mph. Meeeewow.

To put those numbers into perspective, let's compare them with a Jag we're intimately familiar with -- our long-term XF Supercharged. With it's 4.2-liter blown V-8 making 420 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, that car also puts down some serious numbers; 60 mph arrives in just 4.9 seconds, the quarter mile in 13.4 (at 106.9 mph). Not quite the accelerative equal of the $15,000 more expensive XFR, but it is surprising in other situations.
